Artifact | Classroom Map
Knowledge Indicator: The competent teacher understands principles of and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management.
To the left is a map of the classroom I am student teaching in. Although it is not my classroom, I am using the setup as my artifact because it highlights key aspects to creating a positive learning environment. Additionally, I will describe changes that I could make to benefit the changes in the environment as necessary.

Reflection | Classroom Map
I chose this artifact in order to highlight the major principles of classroom management that my cooperating teacher has set-up. This artifact is a map of the classroom in which I student taught and observed. I plan on using many of the arrangements and ideas that she has utilized in my future classroom. For instance, she has a small classroom library that she rotates based on the reading unit the students are working on; recently, many of the books she had set out were nonfiction because that was the current unit. Another major aspect that I love about her classroom and plan to use is her effective display of student artwork. The three bulletin boards placed around showcases student work; this work frequently changes as well based off of the projects students have just finished. Even though the student desks are set up in rows, I would prefer to change the set up based on the activities going on in the classroom for that day; however, I recognize the importance of placing students in rows to better facilitate classroom management.
This artifact meets this standard because this classroom structure directly influenced the learning environment making it into a space where students can feel engaged, productive, and supported as they learn.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of this standard because with it I recognize and plan for strategies that will facilitate classroom and behavior management. While the bookshelves are helpful for displaying informational and enjoyable books, they also provide a location for students to leave their journals. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the students know to come to class and begin journaling; since they are able to leave their journals in class, they always have them available, which prevent time wasting. This strategy is particularly useful to me because I plan on using it in the future for bell-to-bell teaching as it provides both routine and a writing practice as well as acts as a startup to class. However, my main purpose in using this as my artifact is to highlight how organization leads to better classroom and behavior management because it sets the standard for what is expected. As shown from the map, the teacher and students each have their own personal workspace as well as places where they come together.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because with it I can manage small changes and needs in the classroom. For example, my teacher has 3 separate filing cabinets each clearly marked and organized, which has accumulated after her 30 years of teaching. However, as a beginning teacher I have zero and also a need for zero, but I recognize the need to structure and develop that as I progress as teacher. Additionally, while this set-up shows the seats in a row, I know that I will learn to make adjustments as needed, which I can save and add to my growing filing system.
This artifact indicates my knowledge of the principles of and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management because I know to set up my classroom in a way that facilitates the best type of involvement for the lesson. I should make materials available but not distracting, and I should also set it up in a way to allow me to observe and interact with my class at all times.

Artifact | Classroom Expectations and Rules
Knowledge Indicator: The competent teacher knows strategies to implement behavior management and behavior intervention planning to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
Reflection | Classroom Expectations and Rules
I chose this artifact in order to list and describe my expectations for class, the necessary rules needed, and what the consequences were for infractions. For this activity I created the rules and expectations that I wanted use in my ideal classroom; however, I would adapt this list to my current classroom if necessary. In this assignment I specifically list the general expectations that I have, such as respect for everyone, because to me these are non-negotiable ideas and must be upheld at all times. Also, within the assignment I listed how I would deal with infractions. For example, I want students to be on time and ready for class. To make accommodations, I allow student 3 freebies when they are tardy because sometimes it just happens; however, after that they receive a detention.
This artifact meets this standard because with my rules and regulations I ensure a safe and productive learning environment for my students. With these rules, I both set the standard and consequences for behavior, which I intend to uphold. The next step after creating these rules and introducing them to my class is to continually uphold them.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of this standard because within it I plan for specific strategies that will implement behavior management and also lists ways to handle those infractions. From my experience I have seen that the best rules are those that are constantly followed or punished when not. The rules are necessary to create the type of environment in which students can learn and develop all the necessary skills they need to develop. While some rules directly address learning, they all work together to create an environment that fosters a general positive attitude for the students emotionally and mentally.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because with it I am implementing specific strategies that I have learned in my educational experience. Additionally, I plan on updating it as necessary and as I develop my personal philosophy. From my educational experience, I have learned that behavior prevention is the best strategy for stopping negative behavior, and so I have structure my ideas around that goal.
This artifact indicates my knowledge of strategies to implement behavior management and behavior intervention planning to ensure a safe and productive learning environment because the rules and expectations will function as preventative strategies to uphold the positive needs of my classroom. Then, the consequences aspect of the assignment provides a structure for dealing with the infractions that may occur so that the environment will continue to be upheld.
